Ross-Man!

I lived in Slidell LA from 92-94. They had a breakthru alternative radio station there called The Zephyr. Besides the music, they had a few characters for DJs. Nobody was more off-the-wall than Ross-Man. The story behind him is he just walked into the station and started talking jibberish that everyone laughed at, so they put him on the air, "to see what would happen". Genius is what happen, I tells yah. A mayonaise and battery acid layered sandwich of randomness.

I can't find any snippets of the Ross-Man on my mixtapes from the day. Thankfully he is still a functioning human being, and has done a few podcasts as Dr. Ross Shields. Go to It's New Orleans, then search for Psych Ward in the podcasts. Thank God, he is still a wonderful cajun-flavored knuckle-dork. I have only listened to the lunar lunacy episode... it was everything that I had hoped for.

Retro Auto-tune

Back in my day, we didn't have auto-tune. We had what we called, backing vocals. Below is a perfect example. Dave Stewart (half of the Eurythmics) is a guitarist, not a singer. That didn't stop him from pursuing a solo career. He hired a female backing vocalist that could carry a tune, and went forth and produced music. Not really meant to be a criticism, Dave Stewart did produce some good music. Below is an example.

Mixtape Madness

I received my first boom box in 1980. I then proceeded to record off of the radio for the next couple decades. The results were what I called "junk tapes". I think the general public would call them mix-tapes. So that's how I will refer to them to you folk.

I am embarrassed by the ones from the 80s. I was mainly into hair bands and 70s classic rock during that decade. But then the metamorphosis from moving out to Rapid City occurred when I became involved with the college radio station out there (KTEQ). So that is where I started my digitalization project.

So here is my media upload page. These are from tapes, recorded off of radio. On occasion I was slow on hitting the record button, and missed a few seconds off of a song. I was a fan of Bob Yates Radio Basics, a talk show on KSTP AM 1500 in the Twin Cities. Also a fan of Saturday Morning sports talk on the same station, so you will here the occasional babble from these sources.
